Our Journey to Maelyn

This year, my class had the opportunity to participate in an amazing program. Ten classes from the York Region Board were chosen to write an original song about one of the Board's ten character traits. The focus for my class was on the trait, 'Initiative.'

We worked with a musician, Gregg Lawless, who was fabulous with the kids. All year we including writing lyrics in our literacy program, while also integrating learning about music and it's components.

The students eventually created an original song about initiative with Gregg. They worked tirelessly to learn their song and to perform it with flair! We were fortunate enough to present our song, along with nine other classes, at the Markham Theatre a few weeks ago. The students were even backed up by a full live band! It was amazing!

I am so very proud of everything the students accomplished. I have included a few pictures of my students in their matching t-shirts, taken just before the concert. Unfortunately, no cameras were permitted in the theatre. However, a professionally recorded CD and DVD of the event will be made available to the students, teachers, and parents. I can't wait to see it again!
